Personal Colour Analysis: Korea’s Favourite Confidence Tool

October 31, 2026•5 min read

In Seoul, booking a personal colour analysis is as normal as booking a haircut. Studios all over the city offer it, young professionals do it before job interviews, and visitors now travel to Korea specifically for it. When I was in Korea myself, I had my own colours analyzed, and I understood within an hour why Koreans take this so seriously. It is one of the most practical confidence tools I have ever come across.

What personal colour analysis is

The idea is simple. Every person’s skin has its own undertone and level of contrast, and colours interact with it differently. Some shades make your skin look clear, your eyes brighter and your face rested. Others, worn right beside your face, make you look tired even when you are not.

In a session, a trained analyst sits you in natural-style lighting, usually with a bare face or minimal makeup, and drapes dozens of coloured fabrics under your chin, one after another. The difference is not subtle. With the right colours, you can see your own face change in the mirror. By the end, you know your palette: the family of colours, often described in seasons like spring, summer, autumn and winter, that truly suit you, and the specific shades within it that work best.

You leave with something concrete: a palette you can take into every clothing store, makeup counter and brand decision for the rest of your life.

Why Korea made it an art form

Colour analysis exists in North America too, but Korea turned it into a precise craft. The country’s beauty industry is famously exact, and Korean analysts have refined the method into fine-grained systems, careful lighting and detailed diagnostics. Seoul is now widely considered the best place in the world to have it done, and sessions there often cost less than an equivalent appointment at home.

It fits the broader Korean approach you see in skincare as well: measure first, then decide. Do not guess about your own face.

Why this matters for women in business

Here is where it stops being about fashion. If you run a business, you are looked at constantly: client meetings, video calls, speaking, photos, social media. Your colours are part of your communication whether you choose them or not.

Knowing your palette changes practical things. Shopping becomes faster and cheaper, because you stop buying beautiful things that never get worn. Your wardrobe starts to work together instead of being a collection of one-off purchases. Getting dressed for an important day stops being a small morning crisis. And on camera, the right colours do quietly what filters can only fake: they make you look awake, healthy and sure of yourself.

I think of it as personal brand strategy you wear. Most of us spend real money presenting our businesses well, then stand in front of the logo in a colour that fights our own face.

The palette does not stop at clothing. The same undertones guide hair colour, makeup, glasses frames and jewellery, which is why many Korean studios finish a session with makeup shades matched to your result. One decision, made once and made properly, improves a hundred small decisions after it.

Better with company

There is one more thing I did not expect: colour analysis is wonderful to do in a group. Watching a friend’s face change under different drapes teaches you to see what the analyst sees, and the room gets loud every time a perfect colour lands. The women on our journeys compare palettes over dinner afterwards, and the shopping day that follows has a completely different energy, because everyone finally knows what she is looking for.

What to expect from a session

A proper session takes about an hour to ninety minutes. Come with a clean face, or close to it, and wear something neutral. You do not need to prepare anything else, and you do not need any knowledge of fashion or makeup. A good analyst explains what she is seeing as she goes, so you learn to see it yourself. That last part matters most, because the skill stays with you long after the appointment, every time you stand in a fitting room.

One caution: your palette is a tool, not a rulebook. Nobody will forbid you from wearing black. You will simply know what it costs you, and how to fix it with the right scarf or lipstick.

It is also a lovely thing to do for yourself. Most of us have not had an hour of undivided professional attention on how we look and feel since our wedding day, if then. The session is gentle, there is nothing to get right, and you walk out taller.

On our Lead From Within journey to Korea, a personal colour analysis with Korean experts is part of the itinerary, woven into a day devoted to self-image and personal brand. Of everything we do in those ten days, it is the experience women mention most in the months afterwards, usually in the same sentence as the words I finally cleaned out my closet.
